The Great Gatsby Composition Notebook Daily Writing Topics (Notebooks collected December 12)
Chapter 1 - Through his diction, what picture does Fitzgerald paint of the Buchanans? Provide text evidence to support your claim.
Chapter 2 - Chapter two expresses the moral decay of the 1920s. Using plot events and character developments, show how Fitzgerald examines America's declining moral fiber.
Chapter 3 - Nick states the following about the Englishmen at Gatsby's party:
"They were, at least, agonizingly aware of the easy money in the vicinity and convinced that it was theirs for a few words in the right key." What do these words express about Fitzgerald's view of the American Dream in the 1920s?
Chapter 4 - We learn some crucial details about Gatsby and his motivation in this novel from chapter 4. What does Gatsby want? Why do you think he has such a specific plan set in place at the end of the chapter? What does this show about him?
Chapter 5 - Although it seems as if the reuniting of Gatsby and Daisy goes well in chapter 5, what possible foreshadowing does Fitzgerald provide that might lead the reader to think otherwise?
Chapter 6 - In the beginning of chapter 6, the reader is given some background details regarding Jay Gatsby's real past. Discuss those details and explain what Fitzgerald expresses about the American dream in this portion.
Chapter 7 - The climax of the novel happens in this chapter. What scene do you consider the climax; provide a reason for your argument.
Chapter 8 - How does Robert Frosts' "Nothing Gold Can Stay" relate to the novel The Great Gatsby? Explain by using a line or two from the poem and connecting it to a character or theme from the novel.
Chapter 9 - Looking at the novel as a whole, provide one theme. Remember that a theme is not listed as one word like "love" or "death." A theme is a lesson that is taught through a piece and is written as a sentence. For example, in The Catcher in the Rye we learned that innocence is something that should be cherished because when it's gone we can't get it back.
